If you’re unsure of what the chiropractor really does, it’s normal to feel a little nervous before your first visit. That’s especially true if you’ve spent some time researching local chiropractors, like Dr. Lynelle McSweeney here in Reno, because there are so many different philosophies and techniques. How can you be sure you’re choosing the right chiropractor? If you’re coming to see Dr. McSweeney for the first time, here’s what you can expect.

A clinical exam with Dr. McSweeney usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Before your visit, you’ll be asked to complete paperwork that gives Dr. McSweeney a thorough overview of your personal activity, lifestyle, nutritional, pharmacological and medical history. Dr. McSweeney will also ask specifically about the issue that brought you in, with questions about how and when the pain began, where it’s located, what it feels like, etc.

She’ll focus on these specific problem area(s) by taking you through a physical assessment. This helps Dr. McSweeney identify asymmetries or dysfunctional movement patterns. She’s often looking for clues in the form of range of motion, muscle tone and strength, and neurological integrity. Dr. McSweeney will also conduct traditional orthopedic tests, a body read and a palpatory exam so she can pinpoint areas of scar tissue/adhesion or joint restriction/imbalance. Other tests may include a posture analysis or direct manipulation of the affected area.

All of these assessments will help Dr. McSweeney determine whether you may benefit from chiropractic care. She’ll share your diagnosed condition, her suggestions for treatment, and, if applicable, the treatment length.

Depending upon the diagnosis and your needs, treatments during your visit may include some or all of the following therapies:

  • Moist heat
  • Myofacial release techniques for scar tissue release
  • Chiropractic care to locate and mobilize joint restriction/dysfunction
  • Therapy for spinal disk or joint pathology
  • Electrical stimulation or ultrasound to help combat inflammation or increase blood flow

Your diagnosis will dictate your treatment. It’s Dr. McSweeney’s goal to get you out of pain and on with your day as soon as possible. She’s happy to provide thorough answers to your questions, so don’t hesitate to ask if you’re feeling unsure about anything.

If you’re experiencing neck or back pain, frequent headaches or other symptoms of pain, chiropractic care may be an effective solution. Schedule your first visit with Dr. McSweeney today.
